Quilts - CRAZY FOR HUMMINGBIRDS

This piece is made from small blocks done in scraps of light blue fabrics. These "crumb" pieced blocks are then used as a background to the appliquéd green Ultrasuede vines and leaves. The three dimensional flowers are from Kumiko Sudo's book Fabled Flowers. The tiny hummingbirds are actually painted leather pins. Machine quilted.

Crumb piecing is a quick method for using up small (one-quarter palm sized) scraps. It is a non-foundation method of crazy piecing. Because you don't have the foundation layer to provide stability you are limited to how large you can make the pieces. I recommend to my students that they keep crumb pieces to less than 6 inches.

Doesn't sound like you could do much with that, does it? Oh, but click here to see what you can do if you do a collection of crumb blocks in separate colors.

Combining crazy piecing in traditional block designs or settings can open up more possibilities as visible in one of my Crazy and Sane quilts at the bottom of this page.
