In
addition to experimenting with lovely fibers to use in the
joining stitches, I began experimenting with embellishing the
wool. To the left you see two samples of thread
embellishing on the fulled wool. The decorative stitching
in the left sample is done with variegated cotton threads and
Sliver Lame metallic threads. I didn't adjust any special
tension settings, just sewed as normal. The aqua sample
shows machine embroidery done on the fulled wool. Of
course you cannot hoop the fulled wool because it is too thick.
I hooped some of the peel off/sticky paper so that the sticky
part is to the top of the hoop, then I stuck the wool onto the
sticky paper. I covered the top of the wool with two
layers of the clear plastic washaway stabilizer to keep the
stitches up on top of the wool. I have since experimented
with machine embroidery on the fulled wool quite extensively and
have not had any serious limitations. I tend to choose
designs that have open areas in the design where the thickness
of the fabric can puff up (lacy designs, blackwork designs,
silhouettes, etc.) rather than designs where entire areas are
stitched and flattened. The only problem I have
encountered is LINT. When you sew on fulled wool, you
don't get dust bunnies down there by your bobbin, you get dust
dionosaurs!
