SHARDS ( 24 inches by 38 inches, 2003 ) is a small
piece using many small leftovers of hand dyed wool sewn into
varying sizes of crazy pieced blocks then set together using
black fulled wool. I wanted the
emphasis to be on the colored wool, not the stitching, so the
pieces are joined with a plain zigzag stitch in invisible threadThis piece has no batting in it although it is invisibly
quilted. I've
used a jazzy stripe to bind it.
One of the things that I really like about using fulled wool
in quiltmaking is that the fabric is so sturdy. For a
crazy quilter, this means you can EMBELLISH as much as you want
and the piece retains its shape.
When I started experimenting with this particular fabric I
wanted to find out if it was easy/horrible to do hand work on
(most crazy piecers
love the hand work; I'm an oddity that I like machine
embellishing) so I sent blocks out to about a dozen CQ artists.
As you will see in the samples on the next few pages, they had a lot
of fun working with this fabric.
