STAYIN' ALIVE STARS QUILT
My
latest fulled wool piece (which appeared on the Simply Quilts
episode) is shown to the left. I call this piece "Stayin'
Alive Stars" because I was thinking about that famous
still photo of John Travolta in the movie, "Stayin' Alive"
where he's in a dance pose with one foot pointing down and one hand
pointing up. As you can tell from the quilt, I couldn't
quite remember whether he was pointing up with his left or right
hand.
All the wools in this piece are hand dyed wools done in
gradation shades. The center of each star is machine
embroidered using my Deco 650. The embroidery design card
I used was the Continuous Line Quilting designs by Keryn
Emmerson (#155). The blocks were put together using
invisible thread then the top was long arm machine quilted by
Diane Lecheler of Designs by Diane. She had only a week to
learn how to quilt on fulled wool before I had to fly out for
the filming but, as you can see, she did a wonderful job.
She said the only adjustment she had to make was she had to
print out the quilting designs on regular printer paper as the
thinner paper shredded against the wool.

Because you get unusual shapes when you full from old clothing,
crazy piecing is a natural for fulled wool quilts.
