Below is a photo of the block I was demonstrating on the
segment. It is made entirely out of fulled wool either made by
recycling old 100% woolen clothing (the navy blue, royal blue,
black, dark purple and the plaid) or fulled wool made by taking
100% virgin wool and hand dyeing it then fulling it (the
lavender and aqua wools). The pieces are joined, edge to edge,
with a zigzag stitch using invisible thread. The embroidered
patches feature machine sewn blackwork embroidery designs (I
have a Bernina Deco 650 which embroiders beautifully on this
thick wool). When this quilt is done it will be completely
machine washable and driable, although I usually let them air
dry.
A book on making quilts using fulled wool is in the works but
the publication date is not yet set. If you would like to
be added to the list to be notified when this book comes out,
please
email me. Also included in the book will be
several dyeing techniques, how to embellish on the wool plus ny
projects ranging in size from a tabletopper to wallhangings to
wearables to quilts.
Who were the other two newbies being filmed on the same day?
The two other newbie guests filming after me were Mary Lou
Hallenbeck, of H. D. Designs (click
here to visit her site)
and Evelyn Sloppy, author of the book "Strips and Strings" (visit
her site here). Mary Lou had
many samples of her large monogrammed letters done in absolutely
gorgeous marbleprinted fabrics, sewn up into wall quilts,
banners, etc. and they were stunning. Evelyn was demonstrating
the quilt on the cover of her book and it was certainly
eyecatching also.
After my filming was done we all broke for lunch and Weller
Grossman Productions provided a lavish buffet. My mother and I
stayed around to watch part of the next filming then we went
back to our hotel and flew home the next day.
It was a stressful, surprising and exciting experience. I was
impressed with how interested they all were in what the average
quilter was doing. I would encourage any of you who have a
question to write to them via their website. They have several
staff members who go through the emails each week and try to
answer your questions and they pay attention to what broad
topics you appear interested in. They get several hundred emails
a week so please be patient.
